Online round table "International sanctions against the Russian Federation: Additional opportunities"

On March 10, 2023, an online round table "International sanctions against the Russian Federation: additional opportunities" was held on the "Ukrinform" platform. The organizers of the online round table were the Center for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" and the Institute of Black Sea Strategic Studies with the support of the International Foundation "Renaissance".

A year after Russia carried out a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU agreed to another 10th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, so currently in the world sanctions policy there is a situation where several large packages of sanctions have been introduced, which are beginning to give the first results, limiting the aggressor's ability to conduct wars, however, are not enough to stop the Russian Federation permanently. There are still many enterprises related to the design, development, testing and production of weapons, as well as enterprises in the energy sector, in respect of which sanctions have not been applied.

The following issues were discussed during the discussion:
1. Conceptual views on the further development of the sanctions policy against the Russian Federation;
2. Problematic issues of the sanctions policy, in particular, the lack of institutional capacity to monitor the implementation of sanctions;
3. The first results of energy sanctions, in particular the impact of the embargo on oil and oil products on the further ability of the Russian Federation to wage war in Ukraine, the prospects of the gas embargo, the need to revise the price ceiling for oil and oil products;
4. Ways to circumvent sanctions on the part of the Russian Federation, countries that help in circumventing sanctions.
5. Possibilities for the expansion of sanctions in the military and energy spheres.
